Grassy trails beginning from Du Fresne Place and its carpark offer access to spectacular Bay of Islands views from an ancient pa site. Situated just a short two-minute drive from Russell's historic center, Tapeka Point is an excellent base to explore the Bay of Islands, whether by water or on land. The area boasts a stunning white sandy beach for swimming, alongside a rocky shoreline ideal for diving and fishing. Amenities include a grassy reserve, swimming pontoon, ski lane, deep-water mooring, a boat ramp, and a pristine environment, making it perfect for both active adventures and tranquil retreats.
On the main beach, a well-defined trail leads you to the summit of the pa situated at the center of the island. The peak offers stunning views of the Bay of Islands. As you venture out onto the water from Paihia or Russell, the first island you'll encounter is Motuarohia, identified by its two iconic lagoons—widely considered the Bay's most photographed scenery. Located on the East Coast of Northland, the Motuarohia Scenic Reserve in the inner Bay of Islands offers a safe anchorage for boats.
The Cape Brett Track takes you through regenerating and native bush, traversing a ridge that crosses Maori-owned land before continuing onto conservation land at Deep Water Cove (Manawahuna) for the final 6 km. A side trail (approximately a 1-hour return trip) allows you to explore Deep Water Cove for a refreshing swim or snorkel. The ridge trails reveal breathtaking coastal scenery, and near the Cape's dramatic cliff faces, abundant bird and marine life can often be observed. Dolphins and seals are also known to approach close to shore.
