Russell Four Square is listed as a Category 2 building in the Historic Places Trust Register. It is the only surviving 19th Century trading store still fulfilling it’s original purpose on the Russell waterfront.

Many Four Square Stores are of important historical significance in the development of this country.
One such store is Russell Four Square, which is listed as a Category 2 building in the Historic Places Trust Register, (Category 2 standing for a significant place).
It is the only surviving 19th Century trading store still fulfilling it’s original purpose on the Russell waterfront.
Built in the 1880’s, the store was strangely designed. The sleeping quarters were upstairs and were reached by an outside staircase. The stairs have long gone and access is now by way of a vertical ladder onto a flat roof leading to a porch. Consequently upstairs is no longer used. The kitchen-living room was a stand-alone single storey building situated in the back yard of the shop…

The Bay of Islands Swordfish Club is the oldest game fishing club in New Zealand with a history dating back to 1910. Exhibits of historic fishing photographs, tackle and memorabilia provides an interesting viewing for both anglers and anyone interested in local history – from the original catch boards from the 1920s where the name of Zane Grey can be found to the most recent “Grander” (1000lb plus). The York Street Café is Russell’s oldest café dating from 1975. We are found in The Traders Mall at the south end of Russell town in a tranquil courtyard overlooked by a huge magnolia tree and surrounded by hibiscus bushes.
Other amenities close by are NZ Post and book shop, Internet café, Hairdresser and Florist. Set between the Russell Museum and New Zealands oldest church and close to Pompallier Mission we offer fine food, good coffee, ice creams and a range of cold drinks.
A takeaway menu is available if you need to eat and run. Our menu caters for all tastes ranging from big breakfasts and full lunches to light snacks. Of course we have Devonshire teas and coffees. Homemade muffins, scones, cakes and slices are freshly made. Fish dishes, Sushi and cheese board platters also feature on our menu.
We sell Altura, New Zealand’s finest coffee. We stock a variety of New Zealand beers and wines. A range of Smoothies, fruit juices, milkshakes and bottled water are available. Ice cream in cones, lots of flavours, always a favourite, can be bought here.
